PORT NEWS.

LYTTELTON CAPTAIN CRITICISES NAPIER.

*' The inner harbour at Napier is apparently being let go to rack and ruin,* said Captain P. Pryde, who visited that port a few days ago. Instead of obtaining a good dredge available at Gisborne, said Captain Pryde, the Napier authorities were employing a small gold dredge. The peacons were still lop-sided and no flagstaffs had been replaced. The trouble appeared to be that there were two parties discussing the harbour improvements, one supporting the inner larbour and the other, by all appearances the largest, supporting the breakwater wharf. The inner harbour was being sacrificed for the breakwater scheme. Soccer. The Lyttelton Association Sixth Grade Soccer team beat a scratch team from the Lyttelton District High School by 3-1 in a match played at Officers’ Point yesterday afternoon. Basket-balL Yesterday afternoon a visiting basket-ball team —Villa Maria—played the Lyttelton District High School at the school grounds. The visitors won by 16-11, and were afterwards entertained by the Lyttelton pupils at afternoon tea. Bares PleattfuL A party of twelye sportsmen from Christchurch held an enjoyable hare drive at Port Levy on Thursday on the property of Mr Fleming. Hares were fairly plentiful and over 100 were shot. Most of those who took part in the drive were members of the various gun clubs in Christchurch. Mo. 6 Schema. The No. 5 relief scheme will be re commenced in Lyttelton on Monday.
