SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

COMING-OF-AGE PARTY. A pleasant evening was spent at Dixieland recently when Mr and Mrs P. J. Smith, Cashmere Hills, entertained their friends at a social evening and dance in honour of the coming-of-age of their son, Bernard. The dance room was suitably decorated for the occasion and the guest of honour was the recipient of many gifts. Several novelty dances added greatly to the pleasure of the evening. Mrs Smith received the guests, her aqkle-length frock of black satin being relieved with ivory satin, worn under an oriental evening wrap. The health of the guest of honour was proposed by Mr W. T. House and Mr P. J. Smith presented his son with the customary golden key. Mr J. L. Gant proposed the health of Mr and Mrs P. J. Smith. Mr Colin Hart was M.C.

Birthday Party. An enjoyable evening was given recently by Mr and Mrs L. Brown, Hornby, in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Upper Riccarton, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their only daughter, Nellie. The u§ual toasts were honoured. Mr Les De Thier, cousin of the guest of honour, presented her with the customary gold key. Mr H. Clarke responded on her behalf.. The music was supplied by Mr Bainbridge and Mr M’Bryde. Extras were played by Mr and Mrs Quaife. Songs were given by Mr H. Symister and Mr T. Armon. The lucky spot one-step was won by Miss Clarke and Mr Fifield, the Monte Carlo waltz by Miss M. Drummond and Mr Salmond and the lucky snowball by Mrs Clarke, sen. The children’s competition was won by Miss Myrtle De Thier and Master Desmond De Thier. Mr W. Eaton Was M.C. Surprise Parties. A pleasant evening was spent recently at the residence of Miss Florrie Smith, 52, Sandyford Street, Sydenham, when a surprise party visited her home. A large number of friends -who had worked under Miss Smith for many years were present. Mr F. Bradshaw presented Miss Smith with a goldmounted fountain-pen and a leather handbag, gifts from her fellow workers. Miss Smith suitably responded. The evening passed pleasantly with games and competitions and was concluded with supper. On Wednesday last an evening which took the form of a surprise party was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Arscott, Cashmere Road. The time was spent in games, dancing and items, the latter being rendered by Misses Jean Heath, Betty Anderson and Adeline Pollard and Messrs F. Feaver and W. Pollard. The Misses Phyllis and Beverley Arscott and Mr Edward Arscott rendered an orchestral item which was greatly appreciated. At the conclusion of the evening the guests thanked Mr and Mrs Arscott for their kindness. Mr Noel V. Burtt was M.C. Gaxd Evening.

A well-attended euchre drive was held at Sumner on Thursday evening, when members of the Sumner Association Football Club and their friends spent several enjoyable hours. Prizes were won by Mesdames Claydon and Stoneman and Messrs Stoneman and Neville. Supper was afterwards provided. Card evenings such as this will be carried on during the winter, and a meeting of the club’s Management and Social Committees will be held to make the necessary arrangements. Evening Party.

A jolly party was recently given by Mrs Charles Lawrence, sen., at her residence, Brenchley Avenue, Papanui, in honour of the birthday of her daughter-in-law, Mrs Charles Lawrence, j» n - The drawing and dining-rooms were beautifully decorated for the occasion. Musical items were given by Mrs P. S. Lawrence, Mrs Charles Lawrence, jun., and the Misses June and Nola Lawrence, Messrs Dave M’Gill, Charles Lawrence, Frank Moran, Colin Campbell, Eddie Hegan, Morrie Lawrence, Bob Lawrence and Leo Lawrence. Among those present were: Major and Mrs Bremner, Lieutenant Beven, R.N.. Mr and Mrs P S. Lawrence, Mr and Mrs Charles Lawrence, Mr and Mrs W. Rex, Mr and Mrs P. S. White Mr and Mrs W. Ranger, Mr and Mrs Don, Mr and Mrs W. Anderson, Mr and Mrs C. Morris, Mr and Mrs Renolds, Mr and Mrs Cross, Mr and Mrs M. Lawrence, Mr and Mrs Watson, Mr and Mrs Rex, Mr and Mrs J. Baptist Women’s Missionary Union. A pleasant evening was spent by the members of the United Executive of the Baptist Women’s Missionarv Union at the home of Mrs J. K. Archer. Tennyson .Street, recently, in honour of Mrs Anstice, Dominion president, who is visiting the Canterbury branches. Matters relating to the work of the organisation were discussed at length. Musical items were rendered bv Miss Dudpey and Mrs Anstice. After supper, Miss Bovd thanked the hostess for her generous hospitality, which was heartily supported bv Mrs Anstice
