No. 5 Scheme Is Revived.
STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, June IS. The Government has decided upon the temporary continuance of the No. 5 scheme of the Unemployment Board, according to a statement by the Prime Minister following a Cabinet meeting this afternoon. He said that one of the first duties of Parliament would be to consider the question of funds for the Unemployment Board, and the Government intended bringing down legislation at the earliest opportunity this session. The Prime Minister added that, though the facts of his previous statement and the reason which led up to the announcement of the suspension of the No. 5 scheme had not in any way altered, the Government had taken thi§ more recent action under the special circumstances and in view of the wholehearted demand from all parts of the Dominion. The No. 5 scheme was to have been suspended from next Saturday. The Prime Minister’s announcement means that men will be given work at least until Parliament meets and has arranged for further funds for the board.
