CRICKET.

OLD BOYS' CLUBS HAVE ASSISTED THE GAME.

The Management Committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association is advising the Auckland Cricket Association that the system of having first grade teams entered from old boys’ clubs its working with success in Christchurch, and doing a great deal for the good of cricket. Before the decision was reached several members spoke enthusiastically of the High School Old Boys’ Club, extolling the spirit of the club and the help it had accorded the game and other clubs.

The matter arose when the following letter was received from the Auckland Cricket Association:—"The Management Committee of this association has been approached by the Old Boys’ Association of a large Auckland secondary school seeking a ruling on the formation of a cricket club, of four teams, for entry in the competitions next season. Among those who have signified their interest in the movement are many promising young players, some of whom are Auckland representatives, and one a New Zealand representative. The formation of such a club would obviously weaken the other first grade teams, and also lower the standard of the grade. I understand that your association has had experience of old boys’ clubs and should be glad of your opinions and a brief outline of your esrpei-iences.” "Lend them our minute book," suggested Mr L. D. Page. Mr F. Jarrett: We should send them a copy of our report, which practically upheld the system of allowing the old boys’ clubs to enter senior teams. Mr Thompson moved and Mr W. L. King seconded, that the Auckland Association be told that the system was at present entirely satisfactory. The motion was carried. CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The Management Committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association met last evening; present: Messrs W. Simpson (hi the chair), W. H. Winsor, C. T. Rtx, C, E. Evans, L- D. Page. W. L. King, C. S. Thompson, C. Ayling. E. E. Luttrell. W. J. V. Hamilton, A. Dcy and F. Jarrett. The Auckland Association wrote', saying that the dates submitted for the Auckland-Canterbury Plunltet Shield match, at Christchurch, December 25, 26, 27 and 29, would be suitable if Auckland could arrange to play Otago at New Year. The New Zealand Cricket Council wrote asking for the association's opinion cn the playing of home and away matches for the Plunket Shield. It was decided to convey to tho New Zealand Council the decision of a meeting of delegates to the Canterbury Association; that the present system v.as intensive enough, and that home and away matches were not favoured. Mr Thompson reported that Rugby; Park wati in a backward condition for cricket, and to get it in order it would be necessary to purchase plant in the shape of a tractor and a mower, and incur expense of up to £250. It was decided to leave the care of Rugby Park in the hands of the Rugby Park Ground Committee. STo Coaching. It was decided, owing to lack of funds, that no steps be taken to provide coaching this season, other than urging old plavers who have the opportunity to do what they could with the helping of the younger players. Mr King moved that the New Zealand Council be written to, asking that an overseas team be invited to tour New Zealand in the 1932-33 season. The motion was carried. It was decided to grant the Sydenham Club the sum of £25.
