DON JOSE FANCIED FOR TIMARU CUP.

FORM REVIEWED FOR SOUTH CANTERBURY.

(BY MARTIAN.) The spring meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club will open tomorrow and conclude on Saturday. Fields are large and of good quality, and some very interesting racing should be witnessed. The Timaru Cup has drawn a first-class field, while the Flying Handicap contains the names of some solid sprinters. Pangolin In Form. The programme will commence with the Otaigo Hurdles Handicap, in which Pangolin, despite his burden of 11 S, is bound to be in demand. He was seen at his best each day at Geraldine, and can be depended on to again make a bold bid. Troilus and Haze each had the honour of finishing second to him, but they were a good way back, and they will need to improve if they are to turn the tables. Gay Fashion’s good showings at Wingatui suggest an early win, while Oriflamb is due. PANGOLIN and GAY FASHION are a likely pair. Easy for Painkiller. Painkiller claims an other engagement besides the Spring Stakes, but if she is started here she will go out at a short price, and form points to her paying the dividend. Flower showed up at Kurow, but was not sighted at Geraldine. Perhaps the track was against her and she may make amends if the track is in a reasonable state. Palace is very fast, but lacks experience. The Geisha is due. PAINKILLER looks a good thing, if started, and FLOWER should be close up. Red Shadow’s Prospects. Red Shadow finished a good second to Silver Bingen in the Winchester ; Handicap at Geraldine, and he appears to have excellent prospects off the front in the Washdyke Trot Handicap. Colorado should be prominent. , while Elite Bingen and Harvest Girl have given promise. Further back, l Great d’Oro will have lots of friends, as he is bound to be improved since ; running fourth each day at Geral dine. RED SHADOW and GREAT D’ORO should fight oyt the finish. Don Jose Fancied. • Starshooter won the Kurow Cup in ; good style from Black Duke, and with all his weight will be fancied for the Timaru Cup. High Court’s efforts at Wingatui were not impressive, and he does not appear to be at his best. Town Major has been raised 51b for his success , at _ Wingatui, and despite his disappointing display on Monday will be a popular fancy. Taboo revelled in the mud on Monday, but the extra two furlongs will trouble him. Royal Game, too, would appeal more over a shorter • distance. Beau Geste appears to be coming on, but a race or two yet is needed to get him into trim. Salmo Salar is a promising sort who will be heard from later. Don Jose is a likely light weight in view of his third to Black Mint and Malmsey in the Geraldine Cup, while Mount Boa and Compris are on the up grade, but the | last-named has much better prospect^ . in the Kerrytown Hack Handicap. Waving Corn is very well, but the distance may find her fading away at the finish. Town Bank ran a good race the 1 other day and may surprise. DON JOSE and STARSHOOTER appeal. Charmeuse’s Consistency. Some good hacks are down to appear in the Tycho Hack Handicap. Lord Thomond has not had a race since the Grand National meeting, but he has been working well, and should give a good account of himself. Charmeuse had three races at the August meeting, ' for a first, second and a third, and she will be in strong demand. Her track essays have been of a high order, and she will make the pace a cracker. Painkiller is again engaged and if reserved will merit strong consideration. Wise Choice ran into the money at the Otago Hunt meeting, and may spring a surprise. A 1 Jolson is very well, while Bellbird and Quinopal are improvers. CHARMEUSE and LORD THOMOND in Painkiller’s absence should be prominent. Night Recital Due. Night Recital has improved since the Geraldine meeting, where he was a close third to Royal Love and Royal Limond, and on that showing he must come into the reckoning for the Maiden Plate. Appeal is in good order, while Jael, who has not been out since the Christchurch Hunt meeting, has been putting in good track work. Royal Limond and Standard Rose are expected to show up, both having been in the money in recent efforts. Silver Salver is an improver, and so is Skysign, both being prominent at Geraldine. Silver Salver and Royal Limond will be bracketed. NIGHT RECITAL and SILVER SALVER are the picks. Compris If Reserved. If Compris is reserved for the Kerry town Hack Handicap he looks like being a good favourite, and his backers should get a great run for their money. Assemble will probably do better over a mile than he has been doing over shorter distances. He was a close second to Red Boa at Wingatui on Monday, and last season at Wingatui was yerv close to Waterline over a mile. Night Effort has recent form to recommend him, while Royal Love and Water Power are recent winners. Of the others Tarquinius may do best. COMPRIS appeals most, and ASSEMBLE will offer strong opposition. Rin Tin Tin Favoured. Meadow Lark did not run up to expectations at \\ ingatui, but the racing should benefit him. and he should notj be long now. Gay Sonnet is coming on nicely after a spell, and should soon j be ready. Rin Tin Tin ran well enough { at Wingatui to suggest an earlv win, and Caterpillar may need a race. Silver Coot. (5.7) defeated Arrowmir (9.0 third) nt Geraldine. with Rascal second, necks separating the horses. The first-named pair now jneet on even terms. and the tussle between the two should be interesting pea ranee of the season, whereas \rro\vmir had had plenty of lacing. and Pinei: charge mav again finish in front KanrUgh is verv well, while The! Raider has only tv* .re out the last 1 bit to be dangrrx».*< Me has great, speed On Tcp have his admirers,) and his second to Waving C- n at Win | gatui points to him going 2^n U nd race i First F'-dv *t\d Noteworthv are | sure of suopo t. all having teen in the} money recently,

The i ace l*e-ats a verv open appear ance, twit KIN TIN PIN and SILVER COOT should I'e m the f\ hting line at the finsh.
