DOES NOT DEAL IN CHEAP TROUSERS.

SIR THOMAS WILFORD’S ANSWER TO “ CLIENT.” (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received October 15, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 14. Sir Thomas Wilford's gift of trousers to Mr Forbes has created remarkable interest, especially in the North of England, where a controversy has been aroused over the price quoted, namely, 2s 3Jd. The agents concerned, however, affirm that this is the actual selling price. Sir Thomas Wilford received a letter enclosing a cheque for 2s 6d and requesting him to send a pair of the famous trousers, but he returned it, saj-ing that he did not deal in them.

A cable message from London on October 3 stated that Sir Thomas Wilford had sent Mr Forbes a pair of smart striped trousers, not implying any reflection on Mr Forbes's appearance, but pointing out the seriousness Of Britain’s free trade position. “I bought these trousers in Leeds for 2s 3£d,” said Sir Thomas. “They are ol* good quality, and made in Italy, are brought carriage paid to Leeds, and are sold in large quantities at prices 100 per cent below the lowest Britishers’ are able to reach. The point I wish to make is that even the suggested imposition of a 10 to 15 per cent ad valorem duty on foreign goods will not be of advantage to Britain. Trousers will then sell at 2s 6id.”
