MEMBER FOR ROTORUA DEFENDS ACTIONS DURING SESSION.

Per Press Association. ROTORUA, December 10. Mr C. H. Clinkard, M.P., and the Hon W. A. Veitch addressed a meeting of electors last night. The Mayor (Mr T. Jackson) presided over a fair attendance and introduced the speakers. Mr Clinkard gave an account of his stewardship, stressing the facts that the United Party was not disunited, and that its policy had been maintained despite stonewalling by Reform, and he defended his attitude with regard to the Rotorua-Taupo railway. He read a communication from Mr IT. H. Sterling, General Manager of Railways, with regard to works for unemployment relief at Papatoetoe, Papakura, Frankton, Horotiu, the Mercer duplication, and Huntlv, and the expenditure of £586,000 for rolling stock. During the current year two complete trains and entirely new rolling stock had been provided for the Rotorua services with the first observation cars to be run on any regular service in New Zealand. Mr Veitch eulogised Mr Clinkard’s work. He said that he had come to solve the difficult problem of Mamaku Hill. Although the scheme was not ideal, he thought he had made arrangements that would be satisfactory, including an unproved road. A vote of thanks and confidence was accorded Mr Clinkard.
