Major L. M. Isitt returned north by last night’s ferry. Mr W. J. Hastings has been appointed deputy registrar of marriages, births and deaths at Cheviot. _ The Church of England Board of Missions has appointed the Rev F. C. Long as general secretary to the Board. Mr F. Palmer, a director of J. T. Julian and Son, Ltd., construction engineers, is now visiting Christchurch. Mr F. C t Penfold has been appointed choirmaster of the Trinity Congregational Choir, which numbers about 40 members. Mr H. G. Bell, for some years chief reporter of the “ New Zealand Herald,” has been appointed associate editor of the “ Dominion.” A motion of sympathy with CouncilGm Sullivan, M.P., in the death of his mother, Mrs Mary Sullivan, was earned at last night’s meeting of the City Council. .The Riccarton Borough Council deemed last night to support the nomination of Mr B. M’Gregor Wright as the local authorities’ representative on the Christchurch Technical College Board. Motions of sympathy were passed at last night’s meeting of the United Bowling Club with Messrs T. Chisnall, S. Ir win, and J. G. Poison, in the loss o£ relations they had sustained during the year. At last night’s meeting of the United Bowling Club it was decided to write a letter of sympathy to the Sydenham Bowling Club in the loss they had sustained by the death of Mr John Mitchell. A motion of sympathy was passed at last night’s meeting of the United Bowling Club, with the relations of the late Mr G. D. Macfarlane. Mr Macfar lane had been a very old and valued member of the club. A meeting of the congregation of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church will be held after the church service next Sunday, to consider what action shall be taken in connection with the call received by the Rev N. L. D. Webster to Scots Church, Adelaide. For the first time since he retired from the Mayoralty in 1923, Dr Thacker occupied the Mayoral chair last evening. The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) was absent during the early portion of the meeting, and Councillor Thacker, who is Deputy-Mayor in the present council, presided.
