RELIEF WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.

SCHEME SUBMITTED TO CITY COUNCIL. The revised schedule for the works for the relief of unemployment was adopted by the City Council last evening. The chairman of the Finance Committee, Councillor D. G. Sullivan, M.P., in refering to the matter, said that the council was providing £25,000, and the Government would provide £BOOO by way of subsidy, but he had hopes that this would be increased to £IO,OOO. THE SCHEDULE. The Works Committee reported that the City Engineer had prepared an amended schedule of works to be carried out under the scheme for relief of unemployment. The total cost is £33.000, the council’s share being £25,000. and the Government subsidy being estimat ed at £BOOO. In order to bring the estimated expenditure down to £33,000 a number of works contained in the original schedule had been deleted, and these are chiefly * oads where sewer connections have yet to be put in.
