CROQUET PLAYERS BEGIN CHAMPION TOURNEY TO-DAY.

TWO VICTORIANS TAKE PART IN MATCHES. The U.nited Club’s lawns were very heavy for the start of the Canterbury championship croquet tournament today. The greens received a thorough soaking with overnight rain, and were not looking at their best owing to “ fairy rings.” Nevertheless, they played surprisingly well, and improved somewhat as the day went on. For the Christmas tournament there was an entry smaller than usual, but additional interest was lent by the participation of two Victorian players, the? Misses Evans, who ih the handicap events were scratch and minus i respectively. Last year’s Canterbury champion. A. G. F. Ross, was on the green. One prominent player who was absent was Mrs E. A. Johnson, who frequently has won the ladies’ championship. Events in progress are the open championship (10 entries). ladies' championship (ID, Izard Memorial doubles championship (16). A grade singles championship (7), Canterbury handicap (16), B grade championship (9), B grade handicap doubles (12) and B grade handicap singles (11). The Canterbury championship tournament will last probably fSll Monday, to be followed on January 2 by the New Zealand gold medal championship, open to players officially handicapped on scratch or behind scratch.
