CHRISTMAS DAY IS USUALLY WET IN CHRISTCHURCH.

YESTERDAY WAS NO EXCEPTION TO RULE.

New Zealand’s proverbial Christinas weather, with bright sunshine and cloudless skies, is not usually the lot of Christchurch. Looking back, city residents bring to mind mostly rain, storms and cold and dismal weather conditions. ~ v~ .

Yesterday, on the whole, was a notable exception. • The morning came in with ample sunshine, but with a heavy and somewhat oppressive atmosphere, which seemed to presage rain. This expectation was realised later in the day, but the rain that fell was soft, warm

and not unpleasant. There was an absence of cold winds. Except for last year, it is necessary to go back a fairly long way to find really fine Christmas weather. - Following are the records, in brief, for the past six years:A~ ' l92l—Violent earthquake. which did a good deal of damage and caused some consternation. ' 1923—Violent thunder and rain storm, following a nor'vwester, hail and rain: sudden change from hot to cold weather. l924—Rain set in during early afternoon and continued during rest of day. 1925—Du1l and cold with rain during afternoon. " 1926—C01d and dismal; heavy rain all day. 1927—Du11, but fine. l92B—Light rain during afternoon.
