CONAN DOYLE APPEALS TO SPIRITUALISTS TO USE ELECTION VOTES.
(Special to the “Star.”) LONDON, October 13. An appeal to all spiritualists to use their votes at the General Election to secure amendment of the law as it affects mediums' was made by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle at a luncheon given to him and Lady Doyle at the Holborn Restaurant yesterday, on the eve of their departure for South Africa, where they will spend the winter. “If the Government refuses to give us satisfaction,” said Sir Arthur, “our choice at the General Election must be between the Liberal and Labour candidates—whichever will give us the better terms. To vote against the Tory candidate may be distasteful to some of you—it is to me —but in so vital a matter spiritualism must come first. As a political force we are not to be despised. We can muster about 250,000 votes, and there are many constituencies where our votes might turn the balance.” Warm tributes were paid to Sir Arthur and Lady Doyle by Dr Abraham Wallace, Mrs Champion de Crespigny, Miss Estelle Stead, Rev C. Drayton Thomas, Mrs St Clair Stobart, and others. Mr Ernest Oaten presided. The invited guests included Lady Waterhouse. Sir Robert M’Alpine, Viscount and Viscountess Molesworth, and Lady Currie.
