WILL NOT LEAVE RAILWAY SERVICE
DECLINES POSITION WITH CITY COUNCIL. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, March 21. It is not often that a man applies for a position of responsibility, is appointed to it and resigns before taking up the work. Yet that is what Mr V. W. Venimore, of Franklin, has done. He was appointed costing officer to the Wellington Municipality at the beginning of February, but some days ago wrote to the town clerk stating that he had decided not to accept the appointment, as on going into it he had discovered that he would not fare so well in respect of .superannuation by joining the staff of the City Council as by remaining with the Railway Department. Moreover, he would have to pay 7 per cent of his salary into the fund, as against 3 per cent in the Railway Department. This is the second experience Wellington has had in recent years of a man being appointed to a high position in the corporation service and declining to accept the appointment because of the unsatisfactory superannuation conditions. The first instance was that of Mr Roberts, of Liverpool, who was selected as city engineer, but subsequently declined to leave his position.
