AIMS TO IMPROVE JUSTICES’ STATUS.
ASSOCIATION WANTS CHANGE IN SYSTEM OF APPOINTMENT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 21. The annual conference of the New Zealand Justices of the Peace Association opened in the Town Hall. Delegates were welcomed by the Mayor and Mr Rosser, representing the local association. The president (Mr Herbert Smith), in the course of his opening address, said: “The appointment of Justices on the recommendation of members of Parliament is one that requires careful consideration, and we should use our best endeavours in the right and proper manner to bring before the authorities the difficulties with which associations arc confronted by the system now in force. “ One of the objects of our constitution is to raise the status of Justices, and to ensure that Justices should not be dependant in any way on political or other influences to obtain an appointment. “Justices should be called upon to do more work than at present. It would be a considerable financial saving-"
