POPULAR RAILWAY OFFICER FAREWELLED.

One of the most popular officers of the railway service was farewelled last, evening by his fellow officers when Mr C. L.,Pope, officer in charge of the Central Booking Office, was the recipient of a presentation from the Railway Social Club and other railway organisations. Mr Pope has been appointed stationmaster at Balclutha. The function took place at the opening social of the club, where the president, Mr H. Chapman, on behalf of the various organisations, presented Mr Pope with a travelling rug and Mrs Pope with a dressing-case. Mr Pope was first chairman of the Social Club. Among the organisations that were associated in the presentation were the Railway Officers’ Institute, the Picnic Committee, and the Railway Library. Other speakers were Messrs H. D. Lowry (stationmaster at Christchurch), on behalf of the Christchurch staff; IT. L. Guiness (indoor assistant traffic manager), F. Bishop (coaching foreman) : J. A. Harle, on behalf of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, and J. S. Roscoe, on behalf of the Railway Officers’ Institute. The social was attended by a large number, all branches of the service being represented. The function took place in the Hibernian Hall, Mr C. Frost being master of ceremonies.
