ENGINEERS STRIKE IN AUSTRALIA

By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY, July 14. The first shot in the piecework war was fired when 150 employees of Chubbs (Australian) Company, Ltd., struck as a protest against the introduction of the new system. A similar action was taken in Victoria when the employees of Robinson Brothers refused to commence work under the new daily hiring Sj-stem. A mass meeting of the Amalgamated Engineers’ Unions endorsed by an overwhelming majority the decision of the District Committee that strikes arising out of the refusal of the men to agree to piece-work should be made in groups of the engineering shops to be chosen by the committee. The decision will not operate until it is endorsed by the Federal Council of the Union. Meantime the men are calling a stop-work meeting immediately to decide whether independent action should be taken.
