LONDON, May 16. j A constable turned a corner in White I Hart Lane, Wood Green, to find him-1 self face to face with a donkey “ at; large upon the public highway.” Taking the placid animal in tow, he j commenced to wend his way towards j the Wood Green Council’s pound, when a second ass, quietly nibbling grass by ' the wayside, came under his nhatge. ! With Neddy and Jennie trotting be- j hind him the officer, quite unconscious j of his strange appearance, pursued his j "*But not for long. Donkey No. 3 lav j upon its back in the roadway kicking j its feet in the air in full enjoyment of J a roll in the dust. _ j With a “ come along o’ me ” air. i Robert adjusted his belt and added i Number 3 to his convoy, turning a deaf ear to inquiries of small boys as to whether his destination was ’Ampstead or Margit. Shock Number 4 would have been too much for an ordinary mortal. But Robert was equal to it. With a shrill neigh and a clatter of hoofs a mare left a tree by the wayside, against which it had been rubbing itself, and joined the caravan of the Wood Green sheik. The sequel was heard yesterday morning, when a Wood Green man was summoned lor permitting “a certain mare and three asses to stray upon a certain public highway.” The Magistrate: I think they are worth 5s apiece.
