Mrs Sholto Douglas, Ethelton, is a guest at Warner’s Hotel. Mrs J. Hawkins (Wellington) is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs Mandeno (Dunedin) are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Mrs George Murray-Aynsley, Fendalton, has gone to Sumner for the winter months. Mrs Lees (Brisbane) is staying with her mother, Mrs Charles Wood, Leinster Road. Miss May Hopkins, Avonside, will leave to-night for Auckland, where she will join the Aorangi for Sydney. Mr and Mrs A. Gardiner have taken a house in Hawkesbury Avenue for a term. Mr and Mrs F. E. Greenfield have moved into their new house in St Albans Street. Mrs Struthers, Murray Place, left on Thursday night to spend a short holiday in Australia. Mrs L. A. Rouse and her son will leave by the Rotorua next week for a trip to England and the Continent. They expect to return early next year. Mrs J. Spencer, of Ngatea, and her little son are spending a short holiday with her mother, Mrs A. Brettell, 67, Linwood Avenuo. The engagement is announced of Frank Egan, “The Oaks,” Opawa, and Dorothy Grace Williamina, daughter of Mrs J. M. Shirriffs, Westenra Terrace, Cashmere Hills. A meeting of the Selwyn Nursing Division, St John Ambulance Brigade, was held on Tuesday evening, the lady superintendent presiding. Business was postponed for a fortnight, and the division proceeded to first aid tests under Dr Hazel Allison. An enjoyable dance took place in the Fairton Hall on Thursday evening, there being a large attendance. The hall was prettily decorated. .Music was supplied by Macdonald’s Dance Band (Rakaia), and extras were played by Mrs Chappel and Hector Macdonald. Mr B. Willis was M.C. The friends of Mrs R. A. Scott, Rangiora, who is an inmate of Brocklehurst Hospital, will be pleased to learn that she is progessing favourably after a serious operation. Mrs D. Morris, Sefton, and Mrs W. J. Morris, Fernside, have returned to their homes in Canterbury after spending several weeks with friends in the North Island: A very pleasant evening was spent recently when a party of friends visited the residence of the Misses E. and L. Smith, Haast Street. Among those present were:—Mrs A. G. Cordner, Mrs Webley, Mrs Piper, Misses J. Garland, M. Clempson, R Killiams, E. Midgley, J. Peglar, E. Cronin, Foster, V. Brightmore, L. Fairthorne, M. Riseley and D. Ellis. The death of Mrs. Marion Howard, of Tuam Street, Linwood, on Thursday removed a very old and esteemed resident. Mrs Howard, who was seventynine years of age, was the widow of the late Charles Edward Howard, a well-known draper in Christchurch. She came from Scotland with her parents in the ship Tudor in 1865. The surviving family consists of two sons and one daughter. There are sixteen grand children and five great-grandchildren. In the Coronation Hall, Oxford, on Tuesday evening a very enjoyable party was given to bid farewell to Miss M. O’Neil, who is leaving the district shortly. The hall was tastefully decorated with bowls of chrysanthemums. On behalf of Miss O’Neil’s friends, Mr C. Brown presented her with a xylonite hand mirror and two silver-mounted cut glass scent bottles, also a purse of silver. Those present were: Mesdames Brown and Taylor, Misses G. Barnes, M. Brown, Monica O’Neil, E Taylor (Christchurch), E. Gilmore. Marian O’Neil (Rangiora), E. Alford, Marjorie Stubbs, E. Cooper, B. Gilmore and Ivy Rossiter, Messrs Con O’Neil (Rangiora), O. Alford (Rangiora), L. Lawrence (Sefton), C. Moorhouse (Christchurch), H. Dailey, Les Zimmerman, E. Osborne, Len Zimmerman, J. Sexton (Lees Valley), Jim Gilmore, C. Brown, T. Whiteman, R. Marsh, J. Woolridge, J. Hoggan (Christchurch) and M. Doody. An enjoyable time was spent last evening at Dixieland, when a dance was arranged for the members of the Touch and Go Company and those who have assisted in organising various cabarets before the departure of Cap tain and the Hon Mrs Tahu Rhodes. The ballroom and lounge, also the supper tables, were tastefully decorated with greenery and chrysanthemums. During the evening music was supplied by Len Blogg’s Dance Band. Many songs were given with much spirit by members of the Touch and Go Company from their extensive repertoire. Those present included: Captain and the Hon Mrs Tahu Rhodes, Madame Gower Burns, Colonel and Mrs G. F Hutton, Mrs Kenneth Macdonald, Mr and Mrs Guy Cotterill, Mesdames J. D. Colville, H. Belshaw and 11. Webb, Mr and Mrs Bannehr, Mr and Mrs Ross, Mr and Mrs Cracroft Wilson, Mr and Mrs Harold Barker. Mr and Mrs B. Rennell, Misses Elsie Lance, Elsa Whitta, Adeline Belsten, Lottie Colville, Esme Evans, Barbara Gibson, Norah Hoars, Kathleen Bristed, Dome Walsh, Meta Nixon, Molly Chapman, Betty ’ Cotterill, Adrienne Acland. Nancy Gibson. Mary Cowlishaw, Ngaio Marsh, Maud Stringer, D. Montgomery, F. Emery, Pauline Peacock, Rona Jenkin, Margaret Anderson, Geraldine Anderson, C. Coats (Greymouth), Essie Gibson, Jean Gibson, Esma Lindsay, Thelma Thompson. Mavis Lawrence, B. Renaut., Nancy Hume, E. Ball, H. Mulvaney Gray and Molly Stevenson.

The engagement is announced between Molly, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Milne Shand, Riccarton, to Robert, younger son of Mrs and the late Mr P. A. Laurie, Christchurch. Mrs J. G. Kirk was hostess at an enjoyable party in honour of the coming of age of Her daughter, Miss Mae (Pat) Hanna on Thursday last. Mrs Kirk received her guests wearing a black satin frock with an overdress of black and gold sequins while the guest of honour wore a model frock of flame crepe de chine with inlet panels of gold lace, the waist being very finely guaged. The usual weekly dance and euchre party in aid of the Sydenham Free Kindergarten will be held in St Saviour’s Hall, Queen Street, on Thurs- ; day evening. Good prizes are offered and Reg Wood’s orchestra will supply j the music. The Phillipstown Kindergarten Association are holding a grand committee dance on Monday, June 13, at the Automobile Association Hall. Will’s orchestra will supply the music. Prior to her departure for her future home in Invercargill, Mrs Earle Kennedy entertained a number of friends at afternoon tea at Ballantynes. Among those present were— Mrs M. Hall, Mrs Cropley, Miss Muriel Price, Mrs F. Clarke, Mrs E. Kennedy, Mrs N. L. Price, Mrs T. E. Hammon, the waist being very finely guaged. Much amusement was caused by games and competitions while dancing was enjoyed by all in a room specially decorated for the occasion with streamers, etc. The guests included: — Mesdames Kirk and Porter; Misses Alice Gaven, Ophir Caven, Mae Miller, T. Tucker, Florence Abbott, Mabel Radford, Effie Kerr, Rose Stevenson, Winifred Harris, Gwen Porter, Rita Plumridge and Gwen Kirk; Messrs Claude Evans, Jack Purchas, Alan Cookson, Reggie Fyfe, Jim Butler, John Piesse, Charlie Piesse, Tom Cottrill, Stanley Beaumont, Bert Falcon, Roy Abbott, Alfred Radford, Bob Kirk, Kirk and B. M’Kee. An enjoyable evening was spent on Thursday when Mrs J. Ormandy gave a party in aid of the funds of St Mary’s Church games. Music and cards W’ere enjoyed, and many listened to the wireless. Those present were the Misses F. Haughey, L. Randle, Veronica, Monarchia and Mary Ormandy, A. Royalski, Ivy Fowler, V. Sloan, Flora Smith, Clare M’Anomory, J. Clark, Eileen Buckley, Mesdames Buckley and Ormandy, Messrs Buckley, Haughey, Regotski, J. Holland, O’Reilly, Randle and Rosengrave.
