MELBOURNE TEAM AT THE WICKETS.

Per Press Association. W ELLINGTON, February 26. The weather was fine for the continuation of the Melbourne v. Wellington match. Beard opened the attack, and off his third delivery Campbell, who accompanied Jewell to the wicket, hit a 4. The last ball of Beard’s over, however, accounted for Campbell, who knocked the leather on to his wickets. 12—1—4. Onyons was next, and for a time the bowlers kept matters fairly quiet. With the total at 47, M'Girr took over the bowling from Beard. As a result of beautiful strokes Onyons got two fours. The second ball of M’Girr’s third over, however, found his wickets. 60—2—20. Johnstone joined Jewell, who had reached 30 and was going well. With 70 on the board Brice took on from Badcock. Johnstone sent a hard one off Brice to M’Girr, who was un-

able to hold the leather. Johnstone opened quietly, but his play became much crisper. With a fine placement to the leg boundary, Johnstone brought 100 up after ninety minutes’ play. Jewell meanwhile quietened down somewhat.

At 104 M’Girr was relieved by Hollings. After being at the wickets 105 minutes, Jewell reached 50. There was another change in the bowling, Lambert relieving Brice. Beard also resumed the attack at the northern end.

A separation was made when Jewell, who had compiled 53, was caught by Foley. With Sandford, Johnstone carried on after lunch. Johnstone was not long in bringing his score to 50 and Sandford quickly got going. At 2.30 the score was three for 181.

The runs continued to come freely in spite of changes in the bowling. Both Sandford and Johnstone batted attrac tively. At last a change proved effective, Johnstone being given out l.b.w. to Brice. ( 197—4—69. Ransford followed, but in playing for ward he was clean bowled by the first ball he received from Brice.

Hendry joined Sandford, and started off with singles. Sandford batted more freely than Hendry. The score was 230, when Brice took his third wicket, clean bowling Sand-

(Famous Cricketers). ford, who gave a forcing display for 62. 230 6 —62. Wood joined Hendry and put on 10 before he was caught behind the stumps by James off M’Girr. 215 —7—lo.
