Will Mavis Pycroft Win The New Zealand Beauty Title?

IS NOT ONLY A BEAUTY, BUT A CANTERBURY GIRL TO FINGER-TIPS, BORN IN CHRISTCHURCH. Little “Miss Canterbury” (Miss Mavis Pycroft). who is carrying her conquests into the North Island, lias been described as a perfect type of English beauty, as befits the candidate chosen by the English province of Canterbury to carry its colours in the “Miss New Zealand” Beauty Contest. But Miss Pycroft is not an English girl. She was born and brought up in Christchurch, and her father was born in New Zealand. Miss Pycroft is a young New Zealander to her finger-tips, and nobody has a better title than she to lie acclaimed “Miss Canterbury.” Petite, but graceful, she has never yet been caught by the camera in any but a lovely pose. Mr Steffano Webb, of Christchurch, photographed her in full face, and in half profile, and the result was two perfect portraits. Mr ,T. J. Webster, of Dunedin, posed the little girl as he would, and the portraits were all charming. Mr S. P. Andrew, of Wellington, tried the experiment of a true profile, with delicate lighting effects, and the result is an artistic photograph that is a revelation. “Close-ups” from all angles are the true test of beaut}-. “ Miss Canterbury ” has passed these tests, and even where newspaper cameras have taken unconventional shots, “ Miss Canterbury ” lias emerged triumphantly as the striking figure of every group. For these reasons, and also for her natural charm and her healthy pursuit of sport, Canterbury people have reason to hope that the title of “ Miss Canterbury ” will be converted by November 20 into the title of “ Miss New Zealand.”
