ECONOMIC RESEARCH ON HIGHWAY MATTERS.

The executive of the Canterbury Progress League met last night; present— Messrs J. 15. Strachan (president), J. Storry, W. J. Jenkin, G. M. Hall, M. Stevenson, J. D. Hall, R. H. Webb, W. K. M’Alpine, W. Goss. J. H. Blackwell. H. Holland, M.P., C. Bay non, W. T. Lester, G. Shipley, C. Flavell, J. A. Henley, J. A. Flesher and H. T. Armstrong, M.P. The chairman referred to the statement made recently by the Acting-Min-ister of Railways regarding the electrification of the Christchurch-Lyttelton railway, and remarked that the statement was Ro strongly in aCcord with the policy the league had adopted, that he thought they should congratulate the Acting-Minister on the attitude he had taken up. It was very gratifying to the league to know that the work would be proceeded with without delay. The president and. Messrs G. M. Hall, J. D. Hall, C. P. Agar and J. A. Flesher, were appointed a special committee to report on the future work of the league and on the Question of the mobilisation of the agricultural resources of the province. For the purpose of carrying out economic research in connection with highways, the following special committee was set up:—The president and Mr J. A. Flesher (representing the Progress League), Mi- C. P. Agar (representing the Chamber of Commerce), Messrs B. Falck and F. W. Freeman (representing «he Automobile Association), Messrs 15. IT. Andrews and A. M’Kellar (representing the City Council), Messrs G. Maguiness, W. T. Lindsay and A. A. Fooks (representing the county councils). Mr F. Langbeln (District Engineer for the Public Works Department), Mr A. It. Galbraith (City Engineer), Professor R.l A. Campbell, Professor J. B. Condliffc! and Messrs A. IT. Tocker and P. R Climie. The Railway Department forwarded particulars of a number of special tours it had arranged for the summer months. It was decided to support the proposal of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury to publish a “ Natural History of Canterbury.’’
