Nominations f« r the Foibuary Park Trotting Club’s me* ting close at five o’clock th.s evening. * * * * The Oamaru trainer, J. Ross, arrived at Riccarton last night with Heather Lad and John Bradbury. They both look in good order for their approaching engagements. * * * * S. G. Ware arrived yesterday with five of his Wingatui team, consisting of Arpent, Bachelor Gay and the two-year-olds Ark Royal, Money Mine and Money Peer. He also brought Monoxide, who will represent Mr A. S. Cambridge at the meeting. * * * * The following horses arrived from Wellington by this morning’s steamer to fulfil engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Clubs meeting: Nukumai, Novar, Gleninnis, Bronstell, Bonhomme, Carawock, Lady Passenger, Orchid, Pangolin and First Acre. * * * * The thirteen candidates for the New Zealand Cup are now at Riccarton. Twelve of them were worked this morning, including Heather Lad, who arrived the previous night from Oamaru. The last to put in an appearance was N.ovar. who was on the Wellington steamer which arrived at Lyttelton this morning. * :fc >}.- Most of the New Zealand Cup horses were stretched out in gallops of a mile and a quarter this morning, and several of them pleased their supporters very much by the style in which they

Count Cavour went well in a gallop over a mile and a quarter this morning. He looks big and well, and his New Zealand Cup prospects cannot be ignored. He may not win, but he is likely’ to "run a good race. * * * * The lightly-weighted Aucklander Desert Glow continues to add to his New Zealand Cup admirers. He was finishing on in great style this morning, and there will not be many horses in greater favour on Saturday. * * * * Goosestep carried a big weight in his gallop over a mile and a quarter this morning, and under the circumstances he did remarkably well to finish on terms with Tarleton, less than a length behind Full Swing. * * s|« * The Southland mare Set Sail has been galloping remarkably well since she has been at Riccarton. There is a growing opinion that she will be very hard to beat in the Stewards’ Handicap. * * * * Glentruin did not please in her gallop this morning, and her chance in the Stewards’ Handicap does not look at all bright. * * * * H. Lee, who is one of F. Loomb’s apprentices, will pilot Desert Glow in the New Zealand Cup. * * * * The southern light-weight, W. Cooper, will ride Heather Lad in the New Zealand Cup. * * * * So far no rider has been engaged to ride Full Swing in the New Zealand Cup. The Nassau mare has lost many of her early admirers as a result of her recent racing, but she has made friends among local track watchers from the way in which she has got through her tasks since her arrival at Riccarton. * * * * B. Rosen, who has only recently received his. license, will ride Clarinda in the New Zealand Cup, while he will be on Moorland in the Stewards’ Handicap. * * * * R. S. Bagby is expected to ride Santiago in the Spring Hurdle Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. ❖ * * * Subdivision, who has been racing unsuccessfully in New South Wales, was due to return to Auckland yesterday. * * Will history repeat itself this week? Y r iadimir, Michaela, and Comic Song each suffered defeat at the Gore spring meeting (writes “Sentinel”) prior to recording their success in the Stewards’ Handicap. This year Set Sail and Comic Song both failed to win at Gore. An English sportsman who saw Manfred win the Caulfield Cup expressed the opinion that in looks and galloping ability he would bear comparison to the great horses in England. # # * * It is stated that the Victoria Amateur Turf Club has a “nest egg” of about 100,000sovs. * * * * Pilliewinkie’s withdrawal from the Melbourne Cup was due to him striking himself whilst running in the Herbert Power Stakes. * * * >1: Last year eight yearlings sold at 5000 guineas or over in England, and not one qf them has won a race up to date. * -fi * * An English jockey named J. Taylor, was recently fined 25sovs for making “an inaccurate and unjustifiable statement 1 " in connection with the start of ❖ * * *

After the Caulfield meeting “ Cardigan ” wrote in the “ Australasian ” concerning Thracian, who gave Rampion a good race and beat Limerick in the Victoria Derby, as follows: Thracian is never going to approach Heroic’s class as a racehorse, and he is never likely to be anything more than a moderate. On Guineas form—he was second to Rampion—he looked like winning the Burwood Handicap, a nine-furlong race for three-year-olds, despite his 9st. Henare was regarded as his most dangerous opponent., and he is a maiden like Thracian. Thracian had everything in his favour, as he jumped away' well and Cairns allowed him to bowl along in front. His stablemate, Amarelle, was with him most of the way, and they turned for home with Henare and King’s Consort next. Thracian was clear at the dis-

tance. but immediately King's Consort tackled him he closed up very quickly, and the filly ran home an easy winner from Henare, with Thracian a poor third.

At the next meeting of the English Jockey Club, Lord Hamilton of Dalzell will, it is announced in the Racing Calendar, propose an important alteration to Rule 56 of the Rules of Racing. which will probably meet with considerable favour. Lord Hamilton of Dalzell will move that in all selling races the winner shall be offered for sale at auction immediately after the race, and the surplus over the selling price shall be divided between the owner of the second and third horses and the Race Fund in such proportion as shall be stated in the conditions of the race, provided that in no case more than 50 per cent be allotted to the Race Fund. If any person offers or accepts any inducement not to bid for the winner of a selling race he shall be dealt with under Rule 11. which reads as follows: —“The stewards have power to punish at their discretion any person subject to their control with a fine not exceeding 50 sovs and with suspension from acting or riding at the same meeting, and to report to the stewards of the Jockey Club, should they consider any further fine or punishment necessary.”

RICCARTON NOTES. FINAL FAST GALLOPS. Thursday. The weather was mild for training operations this morning, though a strong breeze was blowing during part of the time. The outside of the course proper was open, and there was a large attendance of spectators to watch the final frst gallops prior to the opening of the meeting. Commendation provided the first piece of interest. With Mime as a mate, he jumped off at the seven furlong post and half-way through was joined by Many Colours, while Mime dropped out. Commendation finished up hi.s task in lmin 29sec, a really good performance, as he was going on strongly at the end. Fool’s Paradise and Buoyant were companions over half a mile, which they covered in 50 3-ssec. Shirley occupied lmin 16 l-ssec for six furlongs. Rapine jumped off at the mile and a-quarter post and after going two furlongs was joined by Star Stranger. They kept together for the remainder of the journey, which Rapine covered in 2min 11 l-ssec, the last half-mile being done in 52 2-ssec. Rapine finished on strongly,

Pink Note and Pink Terrace covered seven furlongs together in lmin 34 1-5

Agrion and Eulalie sprinted down the straight. Haze beat Lucinda in a working gallop over a mile.

Centrepiece ran six furlongs in lmin 16 2-ssec, Serotina and Card Trick joining in for the last half mile, which occupied 50 3-ssec. Moorland reeled off six furlongs very attractively in lmin 15 3-ssec. Tanadees just beat Hynanna, with Enare several lengths away, at the end of a mile, the last six furlongs of which occupied lmin 20sec. Beau Geste was given a working gallop over a mile. Mireusonta sprinted half a mile on the plough in 51 3-ssec. Royal Head and Gold Brick occupied lmin 18sec for six furlongs, with practically nothing between them at the finish. Reremoana finished well clear of Lady Desmond at the end of five furlongs in lmin 4 l-ssec. Reremoana carried a good weight but it was not a good performance. Seatown, Phaola and Zarisee were associated over a mile. The first named pair kept together all the way, finishing a long way in front of Zarisee, the time being lmin 44 l-sseo, a useful gallop. Santiago and Revel were schooled over five hurdles and gave a good exhibition. Rangi Sarto, Coastguard and North Inch kept close company all through a school over four hurdles. Tarleton, Goosestep and Full Swing were companions over a mile and a quarter. Full Swing was slow to get going and she was several lengths behind the other pair when they reached the mile .post. Full Swing was still in the rear at the entrance to the straight, but she wore her rivals down over the last furlong, winning by nearly a length, while Tarleton and Goosestep were together. The time was 2min II 4- the last mile being run in lmin 44 4-ssec. Full Swing finished very strongly, but Goosestep’s performance was highly satisfactory, as he carried a big weight. Lucky Days and David Garrick were together all through a six furlong spin, run in lmin 17 4-ssec. High Pitch and Rouex broke away at the seven furlong post, but the former gradually drew clear and he finished a hundred yards in front, after registering lmin 30sec, a smart gallop. Countersign and High Gear got to the end of a mile and a quarter in 2 min 14sec, High Gear being easily the better of the pair at the finish. Ravenna and Overdrawn occupied 2 min 15 3-ssec for a mile and a quarter, without being unduly hurried at the finish. Scrip was given a working gallop over seven furlongs. Sayonara and Black Cruiser register ed lmin 58 3-ssec for nine furlongs, a useful gallop. Inferno was not asked to .do his best over six furlongs. Jarretierre and Sunny Loch were together after running six furlongs in 1 min IS 3-ssec. Count Cavour, Desert Glow and Beacon Light broke away at the mile and a quarter post. It was not a good start. Beacon Light being three lengths in the rear, but he soon joined his mates, the pair being together at the mile post, which they reached in 27 sec. The next half m/le was run in 51 l-ssec. On reaching the straight Beacon Light commenced to drop back a little, Count Cavour was in front at the distance, but Desert Glow, finishing strongly, was on terms with Count Cavour at the winning post, with Beacon Light two lengths away. The full journey occupied 2min llsec, the last mile being run in lmin 44sec, and the last half mile in 52 4-ssec. It was a good gallop. Count Cavour and Desert Glow both pleased. Desert Glow finishing particularly well, while Beacon Light’s effort was satisfactory, after his bad start.

Set Sail beat Comic Song and Glentruin over six furlongs in lmin 14 3-5 pec. They finished in that order, with two lengths intervals. Set Sail gained many admirers, while Glentruin was disappointing. Footfall covered a mile by himself in lmin 46 3-ssec. Killocra was too good for Yesperus at the end of six furlongs, which he ran in lmin 15 3-ssec. ADDINGTON NOTES. Thursday. A large crowd was present to watch the training operations at Addington this morning. The track was in capital order and a large number of horses were out, but nothing of a sensational nature was accomplished. Most of the horses did useful work. Onyx, driven by J. Messervy, did two miles. She was not hurried over the first mile but she put in a fast last half. Although Onyx paced solidly all the way, it was not one of her best efforts and she is not likely to find much favour for the Cup. Deanwood was given useful work over about a mile and a half. The Australian pacer was anxious to go much faster and he has improved both in speed and appearance since coming to the Dominion. Nelson Derby and Happy Rosa did a fast sprint over nearly half a mile and after a spell did a mile and a quarter in good style. Nelson Derby was obviously sore but he paced with plenty of determination, whilst Happy Rosa seems to be a more reliable proposition as a pacer than when she was raced at the pacing gait. The trotter, Charles Dixie, who raced badly at the recent meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club, did a couple of miles in good style. He was nearly to a break more than once but kept to his gait and put up good time for him. He was eased up over the last furlong. Sheik was responsible for a good | work-out over two miles. He did the first mile by himself and was joined over the last part by Delavan Quest. The last half mile was done at top speed and both horses were seen to advantage.

Dreamalion paced a solid mile. The grey pacer set off at a fast clip and did a round in fine style. lie was eased up over the last half furlong. Dreamalion paced solidly all the way and it was quite a satisfactory performance, i Whakuku and Direct Wood, both in j saddle, and Holly Boy, in harness, did I a fast mile, in which the first-named ! finished in front, the three pacers being | seen to advantage in the work out. Jack Potts covered a couple of miles 1 in pleasing style. The Cup horse did j not appear to be any the worse after ‘ his effort. | The trotter Judge Hancock did two j miles. Over the first half of the jourj ney he was accompanied by Willie ; Logan, and this part was done fast. Judge Hancock went the second mile I at a much slower clip. Peter M'Klnney trotted a satisfactorytwo miles, the last half-mile being done fast. The trotter bears a well-trained ; appearance, and he is trotting very ; solidly, although in the meantime he : does not seem to have come to his | fastest speed. J Don Douglas was given useful work j without the happles. The Australian ! pacer, in the early part of his workj out, did not go steadily, but when he j warmed up to his work he paced in j good style. He later went the last I' mile of Young Blake's two miles. Ouimet was not worked fast, being restricted to slow jogging. It is understood he will be raced in saddle. Young Blake gave a pleasing display- over two miles. He was not sent at top, but worked each mile at an even speed. Over the second mile Don I Douglas accompanied the trotter, and the pair did the last half-mile at a good speed. T. Atkinson’s maiden trotter and

Queen Ida covered a mile, both horses trotting without any- mistakes. Direct Wood was ridden a few circuits but he did not have the hopples on and was not asked to pace at all fast. Dixie Fox and Parkwood did two miles. The first half of the journey was very- slow and the pace was gradually- improved. The last half was the fastest of the journey-. Master Audo was sent two miles. For the first mile and a-half the trotter went in good style but along the back stretch he put in a bad break and took some time to get into his gait again. Despite the mistake his two mile performance was a good one. Bingen Lad and Doris Dillon did a good mile, both horses pacing freely. Bingen Lad was on the outside and seemed to be going the best. Peterwah, driven by- his owner, went a mile and a-half. The American trotter went at an even speed throughout and he was well out in the middle of the course. Peterwah went the journey without much effort and without a mistake. Stunt Artist, who is carrying a lot more condition than usual, was given useful work over a little more than a mile and paced well. Homer worked a solid two miles, the Southland bred pacer being seen to advantage in her work-out. Homer did the journey* in harness and she has become very- quiet in the sulky*. Nelson Boy- did useful work over a little further than a mile and a quarter and the trotter went throughout in good sty-le. Lady Fan, who looks as though she has done a good deal of work, was sent ’ about a mile and a-half.
