BECKENHAM BURGESSES.

Representatives of the Christchurch Drainage Board attended a meeting of the Beckenham Burg-esses’ Association by invitation last evening, and gave the association an explanation of the board's .volume of sewage. The speakers were Messrs Walter Hill (chairman of the hoard >, W. Rarge (Beckenham) and Arthur Smith (Spreydon). Mr A. C. Maxwell was in the chair. Mr Barge explained the sewage system arid its effect xn the Beckenham district. In that district the residents were unfortunate in that they were not directly connected ivitli the main. A series of pumping stations had to be installed. Areas all over Christchurch would have to wait then* turn, and meanwhile the work was being pushed through as fast as was consistent with efficiency. The sewage farm, which consisted of 500 acres, was making good progress, and crops could now be grown wltlx success on land which was in the first place levelled out of sandhills. A-Jr Walter Hill, the chairman of the Drainage Board, said that the board had many difficulties. It was the only local body with money in hand, and other bodies wanted to make inroads upon it for various purposes. Within the, next, three months the board hoped to he finished with the mains. The works had given much difficulty, but. the experience had given benefit, and the work could now go on faster. Half the money allotted had been spent, and half the work had been completed. Mr Smith stated that the Drainage Boar-1 «■»« o happy family. He menI Honed 1 he, fine work of Mr Hill as chairman. With reference to complaints re-

reived regarding the Cashmere scheme, ie stated that it was hoped to link ’ashmere up with the main scheme in lie near future. The ratepayers must ■ealisc that if they panted up-to-date lystems they would have to pay for hem. Everyone would get the sewer aid on eventually, and in the meantime t was being laid on to the most congested areas first. A vote of thanks was accorded the speakers.
