Helen Wainwright Will Soon Attempt The Channel Swim.

Many women swimmers have endeavoured to swim the English Channel, but none has succeeded. In August, Miss Helen Wainwright, of New York, .who was the holder of world’s records before she became a professional last year, will make her first attempt. She will go to France next month and complete her training in the waters she hopes to conquer. The former Olympic champion has an added incentive of £SOO that Mr D. P. Davis, a New York sportsman, is said to have promised her if she negotiates the 24-mile course. Miss Wainwright recently swam 11 miles in Florida waters in 4 hours 50 minutes. Wager Brings Him in Much Wine and Cigars. A- P. F. Chapman, who came this way with A. C. Maclaren’s team, and delighted Australian cricket crowds by his bright batting, has had a hectic time of late in Europe (says an Australian writer). He was down on the Riviera playing golf when the strike started, warming himself in the sun for the cricket season. Then he returned to England to unload meat boats during the strike. His next move was to a cricket field to play against Collins and his men. He put up a magnificent knock of 80 odd, and, incidentally, brought off a wager. A friend had bet him a case of wine and a box of the finest cigars that he would not make 50 against the Australians. As soon as he had passed 50 and got out, he wired his friend, naming the vintage of wine and brand of cigars he liked. Chapman, who js a son-in-law of Mr T. H. Lowry, of Okawa, is well-known I in Hawke’s Bay, which he visited with the last team of English cricketers to play here.
