Thus spoke Mr T. O. Newnham at the Waimairi County Council’s meeting yesterday. “ The motion,” he continued, “ was considered and carried on a show of hands. Then the chairman doubted his count and order-, cd another show and on the second count the motion was lost.” “ I am given to understand,” he went on, “ that the motion did rot go through because Mr Cross hold Mr Spencer's hand and prevented him from voting.” “ I did not,” protested Mr Cress, amid laughter. Then he added as an afterthought : “If it had been a lady's hand I might have held it.” (More laughMr Newnham then put his new motion to the effect that £lO be donated to the fund in question, and it was carried.
