“ If an employee of a local authority cannot retire on a superannuation of less than £6OO he ought to take lessons in economics," said Mr J- Jemison at a meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council last week, when the council was considering a recommendation by the committee that legislation should be amended to provide na increase, of the maximum retiring allowance of local authority employees from £3OO to £6OO. The average working man, said Mr Jemison, earned only Is lOd an hour, or £224. per annum, and retired without superannuation. The recommendation favouring the increase was massed by the council,
