AMBASSADOR’S WIFE SHOT DEAD AT HOUSE.
COOK FINDS ROOM IN CHAOS, AND HER MISTRESS LYING IN CORRIDOR.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.—Reuter’s Telegrams. (Received May 4, 10 a.m.) PARIS, May .3. Madame Regnault. wife of the former French Ambassador to Japan, was discovered dead in her flat. The cook, on entering her mistress’s bedroom, found the room in chaos. The furniture was broken. Madame’s body was lying in the corridor, shot in the head. Evidence at the inquest indicated that she had surprised burglars, who thought she was away from home. She was armed with a revolver, which apparently went off and killed her while the criminals were attempting to wrest it away. The burglars secured a number of jewels. Madame Regnault distinguished herself by her courage during disorders in Fez, where her husband (who was absent from home at the time of the tragedy) was French Minister before French troops were landed.
