AUCKLAND ZOO GETS ALBATROSS.
FOUND ON BEACH IN EXHAUSTED STATE.
(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, May 3. An albatross that has a spread of over eight feet across its wings, and appears to be a young bird, was captured on Muriwai beach on Saturday, and taken to the Auckland Zoo. The bird was exhausted at the time of its capture, and was suffering from the effects of a severe buffeting in a westerly gale. Upon arrival at the zoological park the albatross was put on a pond with the Egyptian geese. Except for the fact that it was in a sickly and weakened condition, and was unable to fly, the bird possessed its liberty, and every effort was made by the zoo authorities to assist in its recovery. To-day it was reported that the albatross was eating a little and swimming slowly round on the pond, but was unable to -use its wings, except in a listless manner. If it recovers. it is expected that the albatross will arose general interest, because birds of its kind are rarely seen close to land.
