“A VERY SERIOUS MATTER INDEED.”
MAGISTRATE FINES GARAGE PROPRIETOR £2O,
“This is a very serious matter indeed, and if it were permitted it would mean the undermining of all awards,” said Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, in imposing a fine of £2O on A. J. Archibald, garage proprietor, Christchurch, for making false entries in his wages and overtime book. The charges against defendant were that between October 10 to February 26 he did wilfully make false entries in his wages and overtime book in respect to the wages paid to a worker, defendant then being a party to and bound by the Canterbury Motor Mechanics’ award. Mr Kennedy, Inspector of Awards, said the award rate was £4 per week. Defendant paid this particular worker £3 15s per week and entered up his wages as £4 15s. Mr Livingstone appeared for defendant and pleaded guilty. lie said the worker in question was not a competent man. He had been bankrupt. The act on defendant’s part was one of foolishness and thoughtlessness, and counsel asked the Bench to take that into consideration in inflicting a penalty. The Magistrate said he could not do this and passed the remarks quoted above before imposing the fine.
