SEAMAN HEAVILY FINED FOR UNRULY CONDUCT. Edward Hodgson, a member of the crew of the Korean Prince, will have good reason to remember his visit to Lyttelton. At a sitting of the Lj-ttelton Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Messrs F. E. Suttoi* and F. G. Norton, J.P.’s. Hodgson appeared on a charge of using obscene language in Oxford Street, and on a further charge of assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty. Sergeant Almond gave evidence that w’hile Constable W. J. Irwin was arresting a man fof drunkenness, accused came up to the constable and punched him several times. Subsequently the constable had to release the drunken man to arrest Hodgson. Hodgson made use of the obscene language complained of. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges. The Bench: Have you anything to say? * < Accused: No. Only I did not know that I struck*, the constable. I saeant to take the drunken man to hi* ship The Bench decided to convict and fine accused £lO, in default twompnths’ imprisonment, on the charge of using obscene language. On the charge of assaulting the constable he was fined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment, the sentences to be concurrent.
