HAWKE’S BAY RACES.

(Special to the “Star.”) HASTINGS, May 1. The Hawke’s Bay autumn meeting was concluded to-day in fine weather, with a rather chilly wind. A heavy shower overnight had had the result of easing the dust nuisance considerably. There was a large crowd present, attracted by the quality of the four contestants in the Gold Cup, and as the horses were paraded, the rails were lined. All four looked in great order. Glentruin and Rapine showing the most quality, but there was little amiss with Grand Knight or Reremoana. In the actual race Reremoana showed his undoubted superiority, for he beat his opponents pointless and pulled up easily the best, in condition. He was decorated by Miss Russell, and Mr G. F. Moore, his owner, received the Ormond Cup from Mr J. G. Colebourne, stating that it was the first racing trophy ever won by him. The opening event saw a bad accident at the fence, right in front of the stands. Maungarongo, an aged gelding by Demosthenes from Formosa, fell when in the lead, interfering badly with Little River and bringing down Strongholt. F. Jenkins, the rider of Maungarongo, broke his jaw. and as the horse lay on him and the field galloped over him he seemed lucky to escape with his life. Little River lost enough ground to say that the mishap cost him the race. KARAMU HURDLES HANDICAP, Of 150 sovs. One mile and a half. 2-—Toa Taua. 9.13 (A. H. Burt) 1 i s—Little River, 11.13 (A. Maungaronga led Little River and Suspicion to the second fence, where the leader fell, breaking his neck and bringing down Strongholt. Suspicion and Toa Taua led down the back from Little River, Wilmoreana and Polyastra. The order was the same to the last fence, from which point Little River threw out a challenge, but failed to reach Toa Taua by a length and a half. Suspicion was three lengths away third, and Wihnorana and Polyastra came next Time—2min 46 4-5 sec. PAKIPAKI HANDICAP. Of 150 sovs. Five furlongs. 1— Imitation, 9.3 (F. Break o’ Day whipped round at the barrier’s rise and cantered in behind the field. Coot and Plain Sailing began best from Imitation and Meny Imp. with Hiwinui next. Plain Sailing shook off Coot at the turn, but Imitation gradually wore down Plain Sailing and beat her home by a length. Coot was five lengths away third, and Iliwinui, Merry Imp and Lin Arlington w*ere next. Time—lmin 1 losec. JUVEX TL E IT AN DICA P. Of 150 sovs. Five furlongs. 4 Silver Tray. 7.3 (N.
