WHY DUNEDIN TRAMS ARE SHOWING A PROFIT.

To the Editor. Sir.—ln yesterday's issue of the “Star” it was very amusing to read the report of Mr Frank Thompson, referring to the trams in Dunedin. He .says that the Exhibition has been a gold mine to the tramways in that city, due mostly to the overcrowding of the cars. That statement may be correct, but at the same time I might mention that for the last ten years or more the Dunedin tramways run by the Corporation have always shown a profit, for the simple reason that the organisation has been totally different to that in Christchurch. I think it is very unfair for Mr Thompson to make such ridiculous statements, ds he must know that the tram service in Dunedin is far ahead of that in this city. He says that Christchurch people would not tolerate for one moment the packing of cars such as in Dunedin. I think he is the only person likely to pass that remark, but let him board any trams (except No. 15) leaving the square, especially between s'and 5.30, and no doubt he will see pome overcrowding. The trams in this city are quite nice and elaborate, too much so in fact, but I might mention that the service is absolutely the worst in New Zealand, and our local manager would do far more good if he would make an attempt to copy Dunedin instead of trying to ridicule it. I am, etc., OBSERVER.
