DON’T WHINE—BOOST!
To the Editor. Sir.—Since I have returned to Christchurch people are continually asking me such questions as “What’s the matter with Brighton?” “Do you think it will ever come back?” etc., etc. It seems to me the majority of Brightonites have hypnotised themselves into a state of pessimism. No doubt the serious epidemic (infantile paralysis), general all over New Zealand in the beginning of 1925, followed by a severe winter, and again followed by the Dunedin Exhibition has had a bad effect —the Exhibition probably being the hardest knock to a holiday and health resort like Brighton. But the effect is not permanent, and the “tyirds w’ill sing again”. The continued pessimistic talk indulged in by many business people only does the place further injury. New Brighton has the finest beach I have seen in any country, but judging bv some of the talk, one would think it had disappeared, taking with it the fresh air and health-giving Brighton breezes. “Cheer up! ‘Tis no use to be glum, boys!” “This world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it, and it will in turn look sourly upon you: laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly, kind companion; and so let all young persons take their choice.” I am, etc., G. T. ROBINSON.
