MINERS REJECT OWNERS’ OFFER.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.—Reuter’s Telegrams. (Received May -1, 11.5 a.m.) LONDON. April .30. The miners have rejected the owners’ revised offer. It was reported earlier that Thursday night’s discussions ranged round the alternatives, firstly, a national minimum percentage above the 1914 wages based on the existing seven hours’ day. which admittedly would involve a considerable reduction in wages; secondly, a higher minimum based on the eight hours’ day, which would make wages in most districts equal to the present scale. The existing minimum percentage is 33 1-3 above the 1914 rates. The miners had refused previously to consider the lengthening of the seven hours’ day, which was secured by Act of Parliament after a long struggle.
CONFERENCE FAILS; COAL INDUSTRY ALMOST CERTAIN TO CLOSE DOWN.
By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. (Received May 1, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 30. The Coal Conference failed. A stoppage at midnight appears certain. The miners' refusal must mean, unless wiser counsels prevail, complete stoppage of the coalfields, with over a million workers idle.
