CHARGE OF NEGLIGENT DRIVING.

SEQUEL TO A TRIPLE COLLISION. The sequel to a collision between two motor-cars at the intersection of Manchester and Tuam Streets on April 6 was heard in the Magistrate’s Court today. One of the cars was swung round after the impact, and damaged a hansom cab. Albert- \V. Furze was proceeded against by the police for negligent driving. Senior-Sergeant Martin prosecuted, and defendant was represented by Mr Tracy. Only the case for the prosecution was heard to-day, as Air Tracy said several witnesses for the defence were in the country, and could not attend. Frederick . William Darlington, taxidriver, of Christchurch, said that on April 6, at about 7.25 p.m., he was driving his car from the station. At the corner of Tuam and Manchester Streets he had seen a car approaching along Tuam Street at something over twenty miles an hour. The car struck witness’s car, which it swung round and caused it to knock into a horse and hansom which were proceeding towards the station. Witness was travelling at seven or eight miles» an hour. The collision had forced the wheel of defendant’s car into witness’s machine, and when defendant wanted to dislodge it witness tried to prevent him. telling him to wait for the arrival of the police. Defendant was on his right side of the road. He was not drunk. To Mr Tracy witness said he had accelerated to get past defendant before the latter crashed into him. Witness was first on the crossing, but did not know his position when he first saw defendant’s car. William Heqry Hudson, who was standing at the intersection at the time, said defendant’s car was travelling at over twenty miles an hour, and the other one at about four miles an hour. The swinging round of the taxi brought the horse in the cab on to it.s haunches. Defendant, who smelt of whisky, had backed his car after the collision.
