PERSONAL.
MINISTERIAL. The Hon J. A. Young. Minister of Health, opened the new Nurses’ Home at Wairau hospital. After the ceremony the Minister left for Nelson. The Hon C. E. Stat.ham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived in Christchurch from the north by the ferry steamer this morning. He left for Dunedin by the first express. Mr G. Hight, of Hororata, has been nominated as a candidate for the position of representative on the North Canterbur5 r Hospital Board for the combined counties of Tawera, Selwyn and Malvern.
Councillor G. Morris, who has served on the Lyttelton Borough Council for a number of years, has resigned his seat. Questioned as to why he did not continue in office until the end of the term, he stated that he could give no reason, except that he had had enough. Mr W. T. Lester/ late Mayor of Lyttelton, has intimated that he will be a candidate for the seat. The employees and staff of C. S. M’Cully, Christchurch Sawmills, Ltd., met on Tuesday evening to say farewell to Mr C. W. Evans, who has severed his connection with the business. Mr M’Cully presided. lie spoke of the excellent way in which Mr Evans had performed his duties and of various other matters of a personal nature. He then presented Mr Evans with an attache case inscribed with the initials of the recipient.. The health of the latter was then drunk and many speeches given. Mr Evans, who has vacated the position of accountant in the office, suitably responded. Messrs H. S. S. Kyle, J. O. Coop and T. F. Gibson were passengers to Wellington by the ferry steamer last night. They are in Wellington as a deputation authorised at last week’s conference between the General Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Produce Committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, to wait on the Ministers of Agriculture and Industries and Commerce, the Hons O. J. Hawken and W. Downie Stewart, and place before them the views of the conference. The requests they intend to urge are that the Government should take immediate steps to prevent the dumping of flour, and that the duty on flour should be increased. They will also discuss the wheat question generally.
