THE JAVANESE ARE MUSIQAL. The natives of Java, like the Ha* waiians, are born musicians, and their music has a rhythm to it that is pleasing to European ears. Even- very young children play the native musical instruments, which are queer, rude and harp-like, made of different lengths and sizes of bamboo, hung closely in frames, and manipulated by shaking. These instruments emit a queer, haunting melody, and are used much to accompany dancing. As one drives through the little Javanese bamboo villages at night the faint plaintiff notes of these little reed instruments are heard, and groups of people may be seen gathered about some old man who is acting out an ancient legend by means of marionettes.
