Crowding about along the counter, anxious car owners pushed and jostled to reach the clerks; they all wanted to re-license their cars with the Government, an operation which ail car owners have been instructed to perform before May 14. The work of re-licensing was commenced this morning, at nine o’clock, and the 4000 cars in Christchurch must all be dealt with in sixteen days. There was justification for the bustle this morning in the portion of the G.P.O. allotted to the work. The average time taken with each person was five minutes, and where a man was ■waiting with three others in front of him, he naturally kept his eye on the clock. However, although the clerks only do this work once a year, they handled it very capably, and it is the expectation of those in charge that in a day or two the time taken with each owner will be cut down to two minutes.

Seven clerks were on the job this morning, and knew it. Five separate divisions have been made along the counter, three for re-licensing cars, one for re-licensing motor-cycles, and the permanent registration cubicle at which registration of pew cars, changes in ownership and duplication of certificates is carried on.
