Miss Lorna Martin, who has been visiting Sydney, will arrive in Christchurch on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Frank Graham, Heaton Street, have returned to Christchurch from an extended visit to Sydney. Mrs J. Gracia and her sister. Miss E. Elliott, of Le Bons Bay, are spending a week’s holiday at Dunedin. Mr and Mrs G. Hickmott, St Albans, who were visiting Dunedin, will return to Christchurch to-day. Mrs T. Eastcott, Nelson, is in Christchurch to attend the Hill-Beadel wedding, which will take place to-day. Miss Gwen Hamerton, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs H. J. Beadel, PapaMiss Bell Hill, of Melbourne, is visiting Christchurch, and is the guest of Mrs 11. J. Beadel, Papanui. Miss Betty Rutherford (Macdonald Downs) is visiting Mrs J. W. Trolove (The Shades, Marlborough). Miss Meredith-Kaye, who has been spending a holiday at The Hermitage, Mount Cook, is returning to Christchurch this week. Mrs Henry Harris, who has been spending a fortnight with Mrs F. S. Davidson, Wai-iti Road, Timaru, has returned to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs A. Macphail and Mr C. Grotty, Le Bons Bay, have returned home after spending a few daj-s’ holiday with relatives in Geraldine. Mr and Mrs Truman, Mr W. Dalglish and Mr H. Dalglish, of Le Bons Bay, have left on a visit to Dunedin Exhibition. • Miss M. Gilbert has returned to Le Bons Bay after spending a few days with her sister, Mrs Guard Waghorn, of Little Akaloa. Mr and Mrs Acton-Adams and Miss Acton-Adams (Tipapa) and Mr and Mrs Weld (Marlborough) are guests at Warner's Hotel. Mr and Mrs E. H. Carter, of New Plymouth, who have been on a visit to Dunedin and Christchurch, left for Wellington on Tuesday evening. Yesterday’s arrivals at the United Service Hotel included Mr and Mrs A. Powell (Melbourne), Mrs Chinaway (Hamilton), and Mrs J. Murdoch (Hokitika). The engagement is announced of Myrtle A. Andrews, M~A., only daughter of Mr and Mrs S. Andrews, Scarborough, Timaru, to Frank Rocke, only son of the late F. L. Rocke and Mrs George Latham, Napier. The engagement is announced of Constance Margaret, elder daughter of Mrs M. A. and the late Mr E. J. Le Grove. Kelbum, Wellington, to Lealand Charles, only son of Mr and Mrs C-. R. Craythorne, Ileatorx Street, St Albans. Mrs A. D. Houston, of Christchurch, who is visiting friends at Bridgwater, Somerset, has recently given lectures at the request of the Victoria League on New Zealand at Edging ton, Bridgwater, Nether Stowey and Shapwick, and lectured on Australia at Coombe Dingle, Bistol, states an exchange. A meeting of the executive of the Women’s Section of the Industrial Association of Canterbury was held on Friday, April 23, Miss L. Tabart presiding. It was decided that the first general meeting of members of the Women’s Section will be held on May 7, when the Mayoress, Mrs J. X. Archer, will take the chair. Manuel Hyman and syncopation are synonyms, for besides being a member of the famous orchestra at the Boulevards Cafe in Paris, he has played in many distinguished orchestras in London and on the Continent. He comes with a band of picked musicians direct from the Exhibition, and their dance at the Winter Garden on Tuesday next should prove a strong attraction. In view of her approaching marriage, St Joseph's euchre players, Papamii, tendered Miss Myrtle Burke a miscellaneous shower in the School Hall on Saturday evening. The evening was spent in cards, games and dancing. Musical items were rendered by Misses B. Knight, Johnston and Davidson and Messrs Pickup and J. Burke. Burke (3), Parera O'Brien. Smith, M Donald, Kerwin and Franks. An original coat fastening is to have three mitred tabs with their ends pointing opposite ways: thus, two would be on the right side and fasten to the left: the third (sewn on the left), would be between the two and fasten with its point to the right. The slightest of such details makes the difference in a coat's character.
