DEFENCE NOTES.

Mitchell. 4th (Cadet' RattaJion. Canterbury Regiment; Lieutenant R. 11. Rodwell. Ist (Cadet! Battalion. Canterbury Regiment; Lieutenant J. B. M'Bride, 3rd (Cadet) %Battalion. Canterbury Regiment; have qualified in the examination for promotion to captain. The following officers partially qualified in the examination for promotion to captain: Lieutenant R. B. Johnson. Ist X.Z. Mounted Rifles (C.Y.0.) : Lieutenant f. 11. Owen. 4th (Cadet) Battalion. Canterbury Regiment; Lieutenant G. Burns, 4th (Cadet) Battalion. Canterbury Regiment. *v M Colonel-Commandant M. M. Gard ner. D. 5.0.. R.X.Z.A.. will inspect the 4th (Cadet) Battalion. Canterbury Regiment. at a parade at King Edward Barracks on Monday evening. May 3. This unit had the record attendance at the parade on Anzac Day and a good parade is expected on Monday next. r-: The medical examination of cadets for posting to units of the Territorial Force, will be held on May 10, 11. 12 and 13. Very few recruits are required for the Artillery this year, end only those who have horses for parade and camp purposes are being accepted for service with the Mounted Rifle Regiment.

Other units to which cadets may be posted are the Engineers. Army Service Corps, the Medical Corps and the Infantry Battalion, in which unit machine gunners. Lewis gunners and signallers are trained.

Many complimentary remarks were passed regarding the general turn-out and splendid playing of the Band of the 4th (Cadet) Battalion. Canterbury Regiment, on the Anzac Day parade. The marked improvement in the playing of this band since it was recent!v organised reflects great credit on the boys

who arc members of the band and also on those who have worked so hard in their interests.
