The Ashburton Borough Council met ast evening, the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith; presiding. The District Highways Council wrote advising that a resolution had been passed that the Ashburton Borough Council he paid maintenance for East Street between the traffic bridge and the North-east. Belt, and Havelock Street from East. Street to the Northwest Belt. The letter was received. The War Memorial Committee asked the council to consider the question of a site for the war memorial. The question is to I be further discussed by the council at i an early date. j After some discussion on the question | of converting the present South Canterj bury Battalion Band into a municipal : band, it was decided to approach Mr j Ricketts, conductor of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Band at the Exhibition, on the best course of action. The council also decided to revive the old custom, which had fallen into disuse, of inspecting the water race at Mount Horrible, and an inspection is to be made on 2>la.y 8. SVUVSS. The Sumner Borough Council met last night; present—the Mayor (Mr W H. Nicholson), Councillors F. C. Cooper, A. Holden. C. T. Denham and ft. W. Harris. , Th e Standing Committee reported that during the year ended March 31 thirtyfour new gas consumers had been connected, making a total of 783. Owing to alterations to the footpaths in Na.vland j Street at Clifton, the main was lowered ; one foot. The contractor for the new retorts would commence work in May. Two extra lamps had been temporarily installed to light the road wjiere it was being widened at Shag Rock corner. The lighting manager had been authorised to obtain a portable voltmeter. On the recommendation of the lighting manager it was decided to alter the direction of j the lamps at the corner of the Esplanade and Stoke and Hardwick and Euston Streets. The foreman reported on the sewerage tanks at Redcliffs. and the Town Clerk had been directed to forward a copy of same to the attorneys for the contractor, with a request for Immediate attention. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £4f)B 9s 5d at March 31, and accounts totalling £2&62 5s lOd were recommended for payment. It was recommended that the council raise no objection to the residents of Upper Clifton and West Clifton using the reserve to the pipe line, on condition that they did such work as required entirely at their own risk and expense. The committee, wished it known that the pipe line was not a right of way. It was decided that the Town Clerk take action for recovery of unpaid rates. A petition having been received from the majority of ratepayers on Scarborough for the formation of a special rating area for the purpose of making a deviation of the sewer, etc., and for the council to raise a special loan of £l5O, it was decided that the council approve of the request, and that the necessary steps be taken to carry out the wishes of the petitioners. A letter from G. M'lntyre regarding the drainage of Alexandra Terrace was referred to the next meeting of the Standing Committee.
