BRITAIN IS CLOSELY PACKED HIVE OF INDUSTRY, SAYS EXPERT

By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, April 26. The “ Chronicle ” publishes an article by Sir Chiozza Money on the world race for trade. The writer points out: Seven years after the end of the world war Britain is able to export manufactures valued at £616,000,000 in a single year, being more than any country in the world, a fact which helps us to preserve a sense of proportion. No area in the world presents such a closely packed hive of industry as Britain. It is said that workmen earn up to £2O weekly in America, but the average in New York city is thirty-two dollars. Britain can beat America hollow- in shipbuilding, cottons, woollens, worsteds and furniture. The system at the Morris motor works at Cowley, where manufactured parts are assembled on a fixed track, compares favourably with the Ford conveyor system. Passing along the track the chassis grows to completion in a hundred minutes. Men are fed at each point of the track with finished parts which they have to fix. the engine being dropped from above, nine men fixing the engine and back axle in a hundred seconds. It is noteworthy that the Morris output has grown even more quickly than the Ford, increasing from 1932 cars in 1920 to 53,587 in 1925. The average earnings for Morris's employees are 82s 6d weeklv.
