A PUPPET OPERA.

Life-size marionettes and small puppets have been seen in a remarkable performance in New York of the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s opera, “El Retablo de Maese Pedro,” based on an episode in “ Don Quixote.” Apart from the extraordinary presentation of the work by giant puppets, tiny puppets and marked puppet manipulation. and a distinctive stage setting, the opera made a great impression. Mengelberg conducted a chamber orchestra of twenty players. The stage setting, in three places, drew much admiration. In the foreground were the puppets of Don Quixote and his companions, life-size; in the inner theatre gaily-costumed small puppets, and on a balcony above the manipulators in white and black dress—the traditional puppeteer costume.
