NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN.

The monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of AYomen was held in the City Council Chambers. A vote of sympathy with Airs Fraer in her illness was carried. Mrs Peers, a new honorarv member, was welcomed. Airs Roberts announced that a conference of women Justices of the Peace of Australia would be held in Sydney in November. The Canterbury Mothers’ Union had asked Airs Sharp, of Sydney, to report on the proceedings. A communication was received from the Dominion scoretary suggesting that there be no annual conference of the National Council in 1026 and that one be held early in 1027. It was considered that it would be in the interests of the council if the conference was held ijear the beginning of the vear. After some discussion it was decided—“ That the Christchurch branch recommends that the next New Zealand annual conference be held in Christchurch in Alay, 1026. It is of the opinion that as a new Government will be in office in 1027. any recommendations which may arise out of the deliberations of the conference will receive consideration.” With regard to the suggestion that the brandies consider the children’s charta as drawn up by the Auckland Community AN chare Council, the secretary slated that she had written to the Dominion secretary asking her to procure some copies for the Christchurch branch. Mr Airey gave an address on the principles of the League of Nations, and the object of the League of Nations Union. He spoke of the enormous range of activities of the league and explained how the league was helping to make it easier for the peoples of the world to be clothed, housed and fed. lie spoke of the economic value of its work in gathering statistics in trade, cost of living, unemployment and housing, also humanitarian work, particularly the safeguarding of health. America was co-opcrating in the interchange of medical officers and was doing valuable research work. One of the league's big undertakings was the task of attempt- ( ing to equalise labour conditions all J over the. world. A vote of thanks was. accorded Air Airey for his instructive address. ____________j
