OVERNIGHT SUMMARY. Inspector Eccies visited Hokitika yesterday in reference to the mysterious shooting affair on the Rimu dredge, j No developments are reported. The Christchurch hounds were to have met at- the Tinwald saleyards on Saturday to hunt in the adjoining paddocks, but the meet was cancelled on account of rain during the night and morning. A meet will take place at noon at Fairfield on Monday. As a result of the timber slump, a number of the larger sawmills on the Coast will shortly close down. This, of course, only applies to the mills cutting rimu. On the other hand, mills operating white pine are reaping a harvest. Work at Kotuku at present, a!- J though steady, is not rushed. The \ mills are not working to full capacity, i but are keeping going steadily. At a meeting of the Methven branch | of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union on i Friday, a letter was received from the ' Department of Agriculture regretting that, owing to the infantile paralysis i epidemic, the winter school for farm- j ers, arranged to be held at Rangiora, . had had to be cancelled. The dates al- j lotted to Methven for the travelling j school were June 26 and 27. A course j of lectures would be given by the dir- j ector of the fields division, the veterin- j arv lecturer, live stock demonstrator j and the instructor in agriculture.
