BASKET-BALL.

•.lie first basket-ball matches of the season were played on Saturday at South llagley Park, where the association has obtained sufficient ground for thirteen basket-ball courts. Every player seemed enthusiastic, and the standard of play generally showed improvement. Several ne v clubs have affiliated this year, and a bout twenty-three teams have entered in the A and B grade competitions. The park looked very gay with about 200 girls in bright costumes ail playing at In I lie A grade perhaps the- most interesting match of the afternoon was that between Merivale and Sacred Heart A. Although Merivale defeated .Sacred Heart, the latter played very well. Merivale v.o-e t'airiv well balanced. their most striking player being a forward who js both quick and accurate at goal shooting. Then came Y.W.C.A. v. Technical. the latter being defeated by 11 points to 30. The combination in both teams was fairly good, and Y.W.C.A showed great improvenot up to their usual standard. Canterbury College, a newly affiliated club, were successful in defeating Normal, who were unfortunate in having to play three players short. In the A grade matches Sacred Heart B defeated Onawe by 10 points to 8. This also was a very even match The B grade matches were, perhaps even more interesting than the A grade, as there were so many new teams playing. The onlv drawn match of the day was that between Digby's and Merivale. when the score was S all. both teams showing " l Sacr"d P Heart and Cambridge Terrace also plaved exceptionally well, the score being: Sacred Heart 12, Cambridge Terrace 10. Then came Onawe and Wolabe. Onawe winning by 38 to 11. In the Y.W.C.A. B-Technical B match the former team won by 30 points to 14. Tn this grade also, Y.W.C.A. showed great St Andrew's were also the successful team in their match against Hincmoa, the score being 15 to nil.

The referees for the afternoon were:— Ulies M'Tone Id. Miss Gray, Miss Archer, Afiss Prior Miss K. Gibbs, M:ss Jameson, Miss Wallcrr, Miss Jones and Miss Adams. ‘ Several other teams will lie playing next Saturday. and the association ,» allowing another week for the affiliation of any new clubs who may desire to do so.
