DEAD SEA FRUIT.
BY
SINBAD.
Oh, Labour leaders are to-day beside themselves with jubilation, and everywhere their ranks are gay, from Papanui to the station. “We’ve won the battle,” they declare, “ and everywhere our foes are routed: we've got at last a Labour Mayor, for Mr Flesher has been outed. Oft did M ’Combs and Sullivan to gain this honour high endeavour, but Jimmy was an also ran, and Daniel Giles succeeded never; but things were better far this year, and cherish expectations we did, and this explains why now we cheer, to know that Archer has succeeded. A peerless, peppy parson he, a credit to the ranks of Labour, and we acclaim his victory, with harp and sacbutt, trump and tabor.” Oh, greatly gloats the Socialist, his mighty satisfaction. voicing : but one important fact he’s missed, which ought to temper his rejoicing, for should our Mayor some measures try the council from its course to swerve he will find the council will deny the power to turn things topsy-tur^y.
