MORE POLES.
TO THE ED IT OX Sir,: —According to the report in this morning’s paper, the Domain Board has sanctioned the erection of a large number of poles in connection with the lighting of Hagley Park. The lights are long overdue and are very necessary, but why the poles, so ugly and so hopelessly out of date? Our electricity department have ample funds, and should give the city and district a lead by putting the wires underground and pa}* for the work out of the accumulated profits. It is to be hoped that the new council will give this matter their earnest consideration, and bring the methods of the municipal electricity department as regards poles and street 'lighting more up to date, and so contribute their share to the beautifying of our city. Of course, the department will say it is cheaper to string the lights on poles, and that ugly poles are cheaper than good ones, which is surely a penny wise and pound foolish policy, as in a year. 6r two’s time we shall, no doubt, see these poles and thousands of other street poles taken out and the wires put underground.—l am, etc., R. B. OWEN. Christchurch, May 2, 1925.
