A pleasing function took place in the Springfield Hall on Wednesday evening, when a largo gathering of friends and well-wishers met to bid farewell to Miss L. Dal by, •who, after nearly eleven years’ service as assistant mistress at the school, is leaving to be married. Mr B. Gillanders referred to the many good qualities, of the guest, his remarks being, endorsed by Mr Innes, Mr Doody and Mr Donovan (chairman of the committee), the latter asking her to accept a beautiful eiderdown quilt. In a neat little speech Ngaire Milliken asked her to accept a handsome bungalow clock, suitably inscribed, as a token of love and esteem from the pupils of the school. Barbara Ging, a senior pupil handing it to her, after which the children formed a circle in the hall and heartily joined in the singing of “ For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mr Black responded for Miss Dal by. Idle music for the dance was supplied by Mrs Donovan (piano), E. Odgers (violin) and 11. Millar (violin), extras being played by Misses Innes, Dalby and Adkins and Mrs R. Milliken. Davidson, Wai-iti Road, Timaru: Miss Edna Jackson, Purau, will leave Christchurch to-morrow ror a holiday' visit to the West Coast. Mrs. Sholto Douglas, who has been spending a few day's in Christchurch, returned to Ethelton to-day. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hyde, who have recently returned from England, left Christchurch this morning and are the guests of Mrs. Bul!en, Kaikoura. Mrs. J. Finney (Nelson) and Mrs. E. A. Allan (Feilding) arrived from the North this morning and are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs James Gillies, Dunedin, who was with the Misses Turnbull, Wni iti Road, Timaru, has arrived in Christchurch. Miss Margaret Black, an ex-pupil of the Timaru Girls’ High School, has been appointed xo the staff of the Palmerston North Girls’ High Scheol. Mr and Mrs H. Sinclair Thomson (Four Peaks), Mrs Derrick Gould (Christchurch), Major and Miss Nancy Bond, Miss Wood (Mount Possession) and Mr Finn (Grange Hill), are the guests of Mrs Arthur Elworthv, Holme Station, Timaru, for the races.
