SLEPT IN A DITCH.
METHYLATED SPIRITS ADDICT. CANNOT KEEP STRAIGHT. Detective J- Allen yesterday afternoon found William Thompson, si mid-dle-aged, sallow-faced man, lying in a ditch in Haglev Park, on old overcoats, with an empty bottle which had contained methylated spirits, beside him. Thompson admitted that he had slept there for a week, drinking methylated spirits, and doing no work. In 1922, Thompson was convicted of breaking and entering and theft, and was admitted to probation for three years. He came before Air Justice Adams to-day for sentence for a breach of his probation. It was stated that the Salvation Army officers could do nothing with him, as he simply lived at the Army’s homes without working. The Rev F. Rule, Probation Officer, said that Thompson was a good matmaker, and was all right when he kept away from the methylated spirits, but it seemed impossible to keep him straight. For breaking his probation, he was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment on the original charge against him.
